- The couple and their three sons moved to Spain in 2024 to be closer to Alejandra’s family
Richard Gere’s former Connecticut home may be scheduled for demolition — but the historic pieces inside it will live on.
In May, it was revealed that the New Canaan, Conn., abode that the Pretty Woman star and his wife Alejandra sold last October is scheduled for demolition in order to make room for a nine-property development on the site.
The couple let go of their sprawling property for $10.75 million ahead of their big move to Spain with three of their sons. The pair share Alexander, 6, and James, 5. Alejandra is also mom to son, Albert, 11, with ex-husband Govind Friedland. And Richard shares son Homer, 25, with ex-wife Carey Lowell.
While, they recently opened up about their plans to move back to the U.S. in a few years, it seems they’ll have to find a new family home when the time comes.
The 1930s home will soon be gone forever, but the salvage experts at New York-based Hudson Valley House Parts are working hard to preserve the architectural gems inside, as detailed in a recent Instagram Reel.
The video begins with an overhead shot of the massive property, offering a direct view of the home’s surrounding greenery and now-empty pool in the backyard.
It cuts to one of the front doors framed with two white columns and a transom window, and surrounded by ornate white trim.
Inside the home, a plastic tarp covers the floors in one of the living areas outfitted with a fireplace. The surrounding walls appear to be completely stripped as the company works to dismantle any components of value.
Another clip pans over glass French doors that open into a bare room surrounded by windows.
“For the past month we have been fascinated by this estate as our team has been working on location salvaging many architectural elements,” Hudson Valley House Parts writes in the caption.
“Formerly owned by Richard Gere who purchased the property from Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, this 1930s home is scheduled for demolition with the intention of dividing the 32 acres into nine large lots,” the caption continues.
The company also expressesdtheir gratitude that “the owner understands the importance of preserving the home’s historical fabric,” and they note that the “Greek revival front portico, cast stone wellhead and carved limestone mantel are on their way to grace new homes across the country.”
Additional pieces they were able to salvage include the “cerused oak library, sets of French doors, steel bay windows, casement windows, antique bluestone and more.”
The property features six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a pool, multiple gardens and a three-bedroom guest cottage. Per a previous listing with Sotheby’s, there are “period details” on display throughout the home.

Before selling the property, Richard and Alejandra, 42, had lived in the home for two years after purchasing it in 2022 for $10.8 million. The Runaway Bride star reportedly wanted to turn it into a farm at one point, according to local outlet, the New Canaan Advertiser.
However, family life took them in another direction.
Richard first teased their move to his wife’s native Spain in an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, despite having lived in the United States since they got married in 2018.
“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” he said at the time. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”
Despite relocating, Alejandra admitted that their family does have plans to move back to the U.S. at some point in an April interview with the Daily Mail.
“For a few years [we’ll live in Spain], and then come back,” the publicist and activist said at the time. “But we’re always coming back. We’ll come back here in the summer because we have the kids at camp. We just have to balance our lives there and here.”
