Sarah Sherman Says She “Obviously Never Meant to Hurt” Aimee Lou Wood’s “Feelings” With ‘SNL’ ‘White Lotus’ Parody

Sarah Sherman never wanted to “hurt” Aimee Lou Wood’s “feelings” with Saturday Night Live’s viral “White Potus” sketch.
The SNL star addressed the backlash surrounding the sketch comedy show’s White Lotus spoof, which saw character’s from season three of Mike White’s hit drama shifted into President Donald Trump, his family and cabinet members. The bit particularly drew in backlash when Sherman portrayed Wood’s character Chelsea with a pair of fake teeth that appeared to mock her own.
“I fucking obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings,” Sherman said during a Vanity Fair profile, published on Tuesday. “Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”
Sherman clarified that she “never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings,” and “was excited to play her because she’s so iconic [and] her character [Chelsea] is so iconic.”
The comedian responded after Wood spoke out against the sketch and called it “mean and unfunny.” In the bit, which aired during Jon Hamm’s April 12 hosting gig, Sherman’s Chelsea said, “Fluoride, what’s that?,” which the Sex Education actor did not find funny.
“I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits,” Wood wrote on her Instagram Stories. “But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth. I don’t mind caricature — I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down.”
The White Lotus star further clarified that she was “Not hating on [Sherman], hating on the concept,” and noted that she received “apologies from SNL,” though she didn’t clarify whom she’d heard from.
However, a few days after she spoke out via Instagram, Wood took to social media to thank Sherman for apologizing. “Thank you for the beautiful flowers,” she wrote.
