Selena Gomez Confirms Taylor Swift’s “Dorothea” Song Is About Her

Selena Gomez reveals that she was the inspiration for one of Taylor Swift’s songs.
While appearing on her husband and music producer Benny Blanco’s podcast Friends Keep Secrets, Gomez talked about her longtime friendship with Swift and their music connection.
“Well, ‘Dorothea’ is about me, one of her songs. And I feel like a lot of moments — huge moments that were self-defining from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between, we were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18, and we didn’t really know what was going on. And so we’ve never seen each other any differently. So when I listen to it, I’m so impressed how it’s eloquently put,” Gomez said.
Swift fans have long speculated that the song “Dorothea” from Swift’s Evermore album was about Gomez given the pointed lyrics, including, “You’rе a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines” and “Your mom and her pageant schemes.” (Gomez’s mom had put her in beauty pageants at a young age.)
Swift herself has never addressed the speculation of the subject of the song but has said that Evermore, known as the “sister album” to her Folklore album, consisted of “imaginary/not imaginary tales.” Of “Dorothea,” she said it chronicled a “girl who left her small town to chase down Hollywood dreams.”
In addition to “Dorothea,” Gomez also revealed that Swift penned an unreleased song called “Family” more than a decade ago that touched on their friendship. Gomez explained that it detailed her having “these amazing dreams” of being in movies but, Swift notes, “in every crowd, I still see you.”
“Then her part was, you believe in my stupid dreams, like playing stadiums,” Gomez added. ”Now, when I listen to those songs, both of those things have happened for us. And that’s really sweet because back then, she was just like, ‘I wrote this song about us and it was just our story,’ and it was the sweetest thing.”
“It’s absolutely unbelievable to come from 17 years of friendship, from multiple heartbreaks and love stories and fun stories in life,” Gomez reflected of their friendship. “We both ended up, fortunately, being engaged around the same time and that was the coolest part.”
Gomez also shared that Swift gifted her a painting for her 30th birthday.
