‘Smiling Friends’ Gets Season 3 Premiere Date, First Look From Adult Swim

Smiling Friends is ready to deliver more joy with season three.
Adult Swim announced Thursday that the absurdist animated series is set to return with its third season on Oct. 5. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed in June that the cult-favorite quarter-hour comedy from co-creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel had landed a two-season deal that will get the show to five seasons.
Smiling Friends’ third season will center on Pim, Charlie, Flint and the rest of the gang in their quest to spread happiness. The new batch of episodes promises to include Mr. Frog sprinting directly at the camera, the friends collecting spirit gems and a pivotal confrontation with an ancient witch. Additionally, the new animated series Haha, You Clowns is set to debut Oct. 19 on Adult Swim. Joe Cappa created the quarter-hour project that centers on the three teenage Campbell boys who navigate life with their father after their mother’s death.
“We love shows that make you smile and go ‘haha’ — and that’s what you’ll get with Smiling Friends and Haha, You Clowns. It’s right there in the titles,” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen in a statement. “While totally different from each other, these two shows are united in that they’re hilarious, gently unnerving and sometimes even profound.”
During a recent interview with THR, Cusack and Hadel promised a memorable return for Mr. Frog and were optimistic about the creative freedom that the two-season pickup would allow.
“It means you don’t have to make the same episode that the engine of the show relies on, which is the smiling friends go out and help a depressed character,” said Cusack of the pickup. “Just like the shows we love and grew up with, the best part is, now we can make a whole episode about a secondary character and zoom in on them more and explore the town.”
Both shows hail from Adult Swim’s in-house production company, Williams Street.
