Sufjan Stevens Believes the Bible Is ‘Very Gay’: ‘Just All Men’

Sufjan Stevens is revealing his thoughts on the Bible.
In an interview with Vulture published on Wednesday, May 14, the “Chicago” musician opened up about how the Bible espouses sex and sexuality.
“The religious is very sexual,” Stevens, 49, told the publication. “It’s erotic. Look at Catholic art through the ages, Baroque art. It’s all very fleshy and sensual and full of naked bodies.”
The TK singer then explained that he’s “always embraced” that in his music.
“I’ve always felt that my relationship to God is a very intimate and sensual one,” said Stevens. “Sacraments are. It’s engaging with God in a physical way. You’re literally eating the flesh and drinking the blood of G– during the Eucharist. It doesn’t get much more erotic than that.”
The “To Be Alone with You” artist noted that being a “vampire” is “the ultimate erotic experience.”
Stevens then spoke about how he perceives the Bible.
“The Bible’s very gay,” he said. “Just all men.”
Added Stevens: “That’s what you get when there’s a patriarchy that’s endured for so long. Jesus was single, never married; Disciples were all dudes ….”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the “Fourth of July” singer also opened up about his relationship with grief following the death of his late partner, Evans Richardson, at the age of 43 in April 2023, per Pitchfork.
“I felt like I had fewer f—- to give about anything or anyone after that,” Stevens said of his death. “Life is short. You got to just be true and honest and real. That’s what death does to you.”
In October 2023, the two-time Grammy nominee released his last album Javelin, which he dedicated to his “beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson,” seemingly coming out as an LGBTQ+ community member in the process.
On Friday, the singer-songwriter, 48, released his 10th studio album via Asthmatic Kitty Records and shared on social media that it’s dedicated to Richardson.

He posted a sweet photo of Richardson smiling in bed and began his statement in the caption, “JAVELIN is out today. Thank you for listening. I love you.”
“This album is dedicated to the light of my life, my beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson, who passed away in April,” Stevens wrote. “He was an absolute gem of a person, full of life, love, laughter, curiosity, integrity, and joy. He was one of those rare and beautiful ones you find only once in a lifetime—precious, impeccable, and absolutely exceptional in every way.”
Stevens will release the 10th anniversary edition of his 2015 album Carrie & Lowell.
