‘Supergirl’ Takes Over TikTok for a Day

Supergirl is taking over TikTok on Saturday. The new trailer, which launched Thursday, will be served as the first video for all TikTok users in 13 territories, including the United States.

TikTok sees this as a test case that Hollywood studios can utilize to market its movies. Given the social media platform’s reach with younger users, it could mean a remarkable amount of exposure for the film, which stars 25-year-old Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the rougher around the edges cousin to Superman.

Other countries where it takes effect for Saturday are Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Australia.

With the activation, parent studio Warner Bros. becomes the first to test a new TikTok product that will allow Supergirl to interact with the TikTok logo. The trailer will also be shown in major locations in the U.S. and UK, including Times Square in New York and the Now Vista Building in London. TikTok is also creating what it calls a Spotlight Page, a hub offering information on the film, as well as for related creator content.

Supergirl hails from director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira, and has actors Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa as Lobo. It’s the next project from DC Studios, run by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life,” Gillespie said at a launch event for the trailer Sunday. Added Gunn: “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all.”
