‘The Studio’ Gets a Sequel: Seth Rogen Comedy Renewed at Apple TV+

The (fictional) movie business is alive and well at Apple TV+.

The streamer has renewed its comedy The Studio for a second season. The series stars Seth Rogen (who also co-created it) as Matt Remick, a movie executive who is elevated to president of the fictional Continental Studios and quickly realizes he might be in over his head.

The renewal for The Studio, produced by Lionsgate Television, comes two weeks ahead of the show’s season finale, which is set for May 21.

“We’re thrilled to be making a second season of The Studio,” Rogen and his Point Grey Pictures partner Evan Goldberg said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to taking the lived experience of making season one and immediately putting it into season two, then repeating that loop for ten more seasons. And, we’re excited to keep all our industry friends and colleagues guessing as to when one of their personal stories will stream on Apple TV+.”

Added Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, “Seth, Evan, the entire creative team and cast of The Studio have knocked it out of the park with this brilliant show, and it has been incredible to watch the conversation grow with each new episode. We can’t wait to see where Matt Remick takes Continental Studios in season two, and hope for his sake that the Kool-Aid movie crushes at the box office.”

The Studio has won critical acclaim for its first season — and inspired guesses about which real-life industry figures inspired its characters. Apple TV+ doesn’t share viewing data for its programming, and the show’s first two weeks didn’t push it into the top 10 of Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Apple CEO Tim Cook did note during Apple’s quarterly earnings call that The Studio (along with Severance and other shows) helped Apple TV+ to “record viewership” in the first three months of the year.

Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Wonders also star in The Studio. Bryan Cranston has a key recurring role, and the show has a long list of cameos so far, among them Martin Scorsese, Olivia Wilde, Zac Efron, Ron Howard, Ice Cube, Charlize Theron and Nick Stoller.

Rogen and Goldberg co-created the series with Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory and Frida Perez. They executive produce with James Weaver of Point Grey, Alex McAtee and Josh Fagen.
