‘The White Lotus’ Creator Mike White to Compete On CBS’s ‘Survivor 50’

“I just don’t think, at this age, I’m meant to live an uncomfortable life,” Parker Posey’s Victoria Ratliff famously declared on season three of HBO’s The White Lotus.

But the show’s Emmy-winning creator, 54-year-old Mike White, has decided to embrace the rather harsh existence of competing on CBS’ Survivor — and not for the first time.

White is among the 24 returning players to compete on the veteran reality show’s milestone 50th season. He competed on the show in 2018 during its 37th season, “David vs. Goliath,” and managed to come in second place.

“Mike, after he finished playing, said, ‘I want to play again,’” host and executive producer Jeff Probst told CBS Mornings on Wednesday. “When White Lotus hit, and I thought, ‘Well, he’ll never play again.’ But he kept texting and saying, ‘Look, I’m serious. If you ever do anything where you have returning players, I want to play again.’ So we’re happy to have Mike.”

On one hand, White — given his fame and financial success — would seem to be at a disadvantage on a competition show where contestants vote each other out for a $1 million prize. But White has cast several former Survivor contestants on his HBO series — something that will surely be on the minds of his fellow cast mates who might want to remain in his good graces.

White has long said he’s had an obsession with reality TV and previously told The New Yorker back in 2021 that his appearance on the CBS show was not meant to be ironic or a stunt. “Survivor is the only show I really devotedly watch, even though I get frustrated with it,” he said. “Part of my job and my way of life is studying people and analyzing motivation and character. I still feel like, even on the most contrived reality show, the people are human and they’re more interesting than some of the most well-scripted drama. And for me, as a writer of drama, I aspire to do what reality television already does. To create characters that are surprising and dimensional and do weird shit and capture your attention.”

White also predicted that Probst would never let him compete on the show again.

“Probst is, like, ‘Let’s be real—you’re never going to go on the show again,’” he recalled. “I was, like, ‘Really? Why?’ We are friends. We’ve become more friends since I was on the show, and he’s an impressive guy. I think the fact that we’ve become close is probably why he says that. I don’t know. I don’t think they want the Hollywood Goliath who knows Probst to win a season. Now that Probst knows I can get to the end, I don’t think he wants there to be a chance of that happening again.”

Other returning contestants for the season include season one’s Jenna Lewis-Dougherty, season two’s Colby Donaldson, season 10’s Stephenie Lagrossa Kendrick, season 12’s Cirie Fields, season 13’s Ozzy Lusth, season 18’s Benjamin “Coach” Wade and season 32’s Aubry Bracco.

During each season of The White Lotus, one particular clip (below) of White on the show tends to make the rounds on social media, showing him finding an idol while enjoying a glass of wine.

Survivor 50 will premiere in Spring 2026.
