‘We Were Liars’ Renewed for Season 2 at Amazon

Get ready to hang out with The Liars again.
Prime Video has renewed We Were Liars, the hit mystery thriller from Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie that is based on E. Lockhart’s bestselling 2014 novel.
“We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans,” said the co-creators. “The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up.”
Lockhart added that MacKenzie and Plec have “big, big plans for season two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well.”
The first season followed Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her tight-knit inner circle, nicknamed “The Liars,” during their summer escapades on her grandfather’s New England private island. The Sinclairs are American royalty, known for their good looks, old money and enviable bon. But after a mysterious accident changed Cadence’s life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seemed to have something to hide.
Lockhart spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her book having a resurgence thanks to TikTok a decade after publication, keeping the show’s big plot twist ending quiet for new fans and how the ending gives a “tip of the hat” to her prequel story, Family of Liars.
“You can always look up spoilers on the Internet. I don’t think people want to have their their experience spoiled,” Lockhart, who wrote the finale script, said about keeping the ending quiet. “They don’t want the end to the mystery. They don’t want the solution to Cadence’s amnesia until they experience it in this show. So we have for the show a similar campaign to the one that we had for the book when it first came out, which is just inviting people who know the ending … to lie. Inviting them to be in the know with us and to lie. I think it’s fun to be in the club of people who know a story already.”
Of the renewal, Universal Television president Erin Underhill said, “The season two renewal of We Were Liars is yet another testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent. This series, which Julie and Carina crafted so beautifully from E. Lockhart’s beloved books, absolutely deserves a deeper dive. And we’re grateful to Amazon MGM for their collaboration and partnership.”
The cast for season one also included Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil, Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis; alongside Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair, Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair, Candice King as Bess Sinclair, Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil and David Morse as Harris Sinclair.
We Were Liars season one was written and executive produced by co-showrunners Plec (The Vampire Diaries, Legacies) and MacKenzie (Roswell, New Mexico, The Originals), and executive producered by Emily Cummins for My So-Called Company, Brett Matthews, Pascal Verschooris and author E. Lockhart. The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amazon MGM Studios. The novel is published by Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books.
