Inside Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Legal Battles: Insights from New Attorney Mark Geragos on the Rumors and Challenges Ahead

As jury selection in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial approaches in early May, his legal team is reportedly enhancing their ranks with the addition of L.A.-based attorney Mark Geragos. Known for defending both beloved and controversial celebrities over the years, Geragos has established a formidable reputation in the legal arena.
His impressive roster of past clients includes notable figures such as Michael Jackson, Winona Ryder, Jodi Arias, Jussie Smollett, and Scott Peterson, among others. These cases, which have ranged from allegations of child molestation to shoplifting, first-degree murder, and filing false police reports, reflect the complexity of Geragos’ career. While not every case has bolstered his reputation, he is widely recognized for his tenacious defense strategies and his ability to achieve unexpected victories in California’s courthouses.
Although Geragos has not yet been officially confirmed as part of Combs’ defense team, an opportunity arose when attorney Anthony Ricco withdrew from the case. Ricco filed a motion to withdraw in Manhattan federal court on February 20, stating cryptically, “under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel [for Combs].”
There are several connections between Combs and Geragos. For years, Kenny Meiselas, the father of Ben Meiselas—a partner at Geragos’ law firm—has acted as Combs’ personal lawyer. Additionally, Geragos has publicly stated that he has been friends with Combs for over a decade and has previously represented him. However, the specifics of this past representation remain unclear.
Since the raids on Combs’ residences in March 2024, Geragos has made television appearances, notably on NewsNation’s Cuomo with Chris Cuomo, where he discussed his friend and occasional client’s legal challenges. In March 2024, during a panel discussion on Cuomo, Geragos referred to the federal raids on Combs’ homes in L.A. and Miami as a “shock and awe message,” suggesting that they were intended to pressure potential witnesses into cooperating with authorities.
Following the release of disturbing surveillance footage by CNN in May 2024, which allegedly shows Combs assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, at a Los Angeles hotel, Geragos expressed doubts regarding the timing and motives behind the leak. He indicated that it appeared strategically timed to coincide with the raids. When Combs’ legal team claimed that CNN had altered the footage, Geragos addressed this issue on his 2 Angry Men podcast. During the discussion, co-host Harvey Levin questioned the admissibility of the footage at trial, prompting Geragos to probe why the network would modify such damaging material.
In an October television appearance, Geragos raised concerns about the credibility of witness Courtney Burgess, who claims to possess sex tapes involving Combs and other celebrities. He challenged the authenticity of the evidence and remarked that Burgess’ assertions regarding the footage “doesn’t pass the smell test.” On News Nation’s Cuomo, he further questioned the prosecution’s intentions concerning Burgess.
“I suspect that the prosecutors brought him in front of the grand jury to run it down,” Geragos conveyed to host Chris Cuomo. “Because I don’t think anybody’s buying what he’s selling.”
