Aimee Lou Wood Reveals ‘SNL’ Apology Over Controversial Parody: A Dive into Comedy’s Fine Line

Aimee Lou Wood, the British breakout star of The White Lotus season three, revealed that Saturday Night Live has issued an apology after featuring an unkind parody of her during a recent episode.
In a pre-taped sketch titled The White POTUS, the NBC series humorously spoofed Mike White’s acclaimed HBO series by replacing characters from the Thailand-set third season with President Donald Trump, his family, and members of his cabinet. James Austin Johnson portrayed Trump, stepping in for Jason Isaacs’ character, Timothy Ratliff, while Chloe Fineman put her own spin on Parker Posey’s Victoria Ratliff by depicting Melania Trump with Victoria’s now-iconic Southern accent.
Episode host Jon Hamm parodied Robert F. Kennedy Jr., taking over Walter Goggins’ character Rick, and was shown alongside Wood’s character Chelsea, played by Sarah Sherman in the sketch. Sherman, who appeared to wear fake teeth during the performance, had limited dialogue but managed to deliver the line, “Fluoride, what’s that? Oh look, a monkey!”
Wood took to Instagram on Sunday to address prior online speculation regarding comments made about her appearance, sharing two stories that elaborated on points she mentioned in a previous interview. She also expressed her feelings about the SNL sketch, stating, “But whilst in honest mood — I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny xo.” The British actress mentioned that she might delete the post later.
Following her initial message, she noted that many people reached out to voice their agreement about the sketch’s poor taste, expressing gratitude for her decision to speak up. “Such a shame [because] I had a great time watching it a couple weeks ago,” she added in another post. “Yes, take the piss for sure — that’s what the show is about — but there must be a [more clever], more nuanced, less cheap way?”
Wood further critiqued the British accent that Sherman used in the sketch, quipping, “At least get the accent right seriously. I respect accuracy, even if it’s mean,” accompanied by a laughing emoji.
About an hour after her first update, The White Lotus star shared another Instagram story stating, “I’ve had apologies from SNL.” She did not specify who from the show had reached out to her regarding the sketch. Efforts to obtain a comment from the show were made.
In her post-finale interview, Wood, who previously discussed the fan response to her and her character’s arc, reflected on the overwhelming reactions to her portrayal, including the outrage over her character’s poignant ending.
“I can let go of the parts of this character, of Chelsea, that have been holding me back and I can grow up in the way that Chelsea couldn’t,” she shared about her character’s fate. “And at the same time, all the bits that I love about her, I can take with me. So, there’s this weird feeling today of rebirth… It feels like today is the first new day that I’ve had in a very long time. Because this journey has felt so long — and the weekly thing, I love it, but it’s meant that I’m still in it. But now I feel like I’ve been released and it’s sad, but it’s also like, I’m free to be Aimee again.”
