Chris O’Dowd and His Starry Spouse Bid Farewell to ‘Unromantic’ LA for Good: Here’s Why They Chose a Different Path

Chris O’Dowd has become a familiar name, recognized for various roles around the globe: perhaps for his work in *The IT Crowd* here, *Bridesmaids* in the US, or *Moone Boy* in his native Ireland. However, his latest role in *Black Mirror* is one that resonates with everyone. In the season’s opening episode, titled ‘Common People’, he stars alongside Rashida Jones, daughter of the late Quincy Jones. The duo portrays a married couple who turn to a risky technological solution to address a medical emergency. Check out the trailer for the season below.

Although Chris was filming the episode in Toronto, Canada, he shared with GQ that he had been residing in Los Angeles with his writer wife, Dawn O’Porter, and their two children: Art, 10, and Valentine, 7. The family relocated to London in the summer of 2024 for several reasons, dividing their time between Bermondsey and Margate, Kent.
Chris and Dawn’s LA Lifestyle
The couple had spent 16 years in LA, leading a relatively ordinary life, despite the glamorous reputation of California. “Honestly, I feel so disappointing. Most of our friends aren’t in the public eye here, and we do most of our socializing at home,” Dawn revealed to *The Sunday Post* in 2023.
She added, “A lot of things, just by being in LA, people presume are glamorous, but I don’t feel like I live a very glamorous life here. I mean, Chris and I are going out tonight, but we’re just going to the Hollywood Improv to watch comedy, eat chicken wings, and drink beer.”
Chris, on the other hand, expressed a more enthusiastic perspective, telling *Radio Times* this year that living in LA felt like “being on holiday all the time.” He also admitted that he missed the weather more than the proximity to Hollywood during a conversation with GQ.
Chris and Dawn’s Return to London
In the summer of 2024, Chris and Dawn made the move back to London with their family, a transition they had anticipated. He explained to *Radio Times*: “Dawn is English, so we always knew we were going to come back. We thought we would wait until the kids were in secondary school, but then Covid hit, and we suddenly felt very far away.”
Chris also pointed out that with their parents aging, being closer to home brought comfort, noting that the family visits Ireland “a good bit.” When discussing the possibility of their children developing English accents, he joked, “I don’t know how I’d feel about that—there’s a lot of generational trauma there! I can live with them having American accents, but they are a bit of a mish-mash at the moment—let’s see how it plays out!”
