Why Selena Gomez “Almost Didn’t Come” to Proposal Surprise From Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco may be happily engaged now, but they explained why that day wasn’t going according as planned.
While making an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the couple, who were celebrating the release of their collaborative album I Said I Love You First, reflected on the day of their proposal.
Gomez said she had no inkling that it was coming. The day of, she woke up thinking they were going to do promo for the album, however was not in the mood to travel far. “I woke up and I was very confused on what was happening on where we were going because it seemed kind of far. So i’m kind of a little grumpy. I’m like, ‘I really am tired. This is too far,’” she recalled.
Gomez said she then told Blanco that after the shoot, she was going to hang out with her friends to which Blanco said, “Uh okay sure. We’ll see when you get here.”
“Of course i’m freaking out. She was mad,” he added. “She almost didn’t even come. She was like, ‘I really don’t feel that well. I think I’m just gonna stay home today. Can’t we just make up the shoot another day?’”
Blanco then explained that he felt overwhelmed given he had to lie to Gomez: “First of all, getting engaged to someone is the craziest thing in the world. Right before you tell someone you’re gonna be married to them forever, they’re like, ‘Show me how good you can lie to me.’ It’s the hardest thing in the world. It’s so hard!”
He added, “I tell her everything so it was like she was just upset with me because the day before I was just making bad lies,” he said, also sharing that the ring was hidden in the box in a bag that he thought no one would go in.
“It was the scariest week of my life,” Blanco said.
Though a happy day, they both said they “forgot everything” given they were both freaking out during the proposal.
As for wedding planning, Gomez shared that though they aren’t planning “exactly at this moment” but they’ll make sure to have good music at the wedding which will be Blanco’s job.
“We’ve been moving so quickly. She’s carrying a 35-pound dress at the Oscars. You think we have time to figure out our marriage plans?” Blanco joked.
On Friday, the couple released their first collaborative album. The 15-track album — released through SMG Music, Friends Keep Secrets and Interscope Records — is chronicles their “present, past and future,” said Gomez.
“The music was very fun but cathartic because we got to know each other on a deeper level,” Gomez said of the album.
