Lauren Sánchez, Katy Perry, and Gayle King Flaunt Bold Designer Astronaut Suits in Exciting Pre-Space Flight Showcase

Lauren Sánchez recently shared insights about the custom astronaut suits designed for herself, Katy Perry, and Gayle King, which they will wear during Blue Origin’s inaugural all-female space flight on April 14. Collaborating with Monse designers and co-founders Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, Sánchez aimed to create suits that not only function effectively but also possess a flattering and stylish appeal.
The trio, along with NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, will embark on this historic journey aboard a Blue Origin rocket on Monday, April 14. This mission marks a significant milestone as it is the first all-female space launch for Jeff Bezos’ company.
As they prepare for takeoff, the women will don astronaut suits specifically tailored for this groundbreaking flight. Sánchez, 55, explained to The New York Times that her design collaboration began with Monse co-founders in late 2024.
“Typically, these suits are designed for men,” she noted, highlighting the need for adjustments made afterward for female astronauts. However, the Blue Origin crew will wear fitted suits crafted from “flame-resistant stretch neoprene,” featuring design elements that enhance their silhouettes and allow for minor customizations, such as zippers on the calves for a flared leg.
To ensure a perfect fit, the women underwent 3-D body scans for their space outfits. Sánchez described the outcome of their design work as “elegant,” while also adding that “they also bring a little spice to space.”
Garcia mentioned that they aimed for a design that embraced “simplicity,” but also wanted to incorporate a touch of “danger,” drawing inspiration from motocross gear and ski suits. He humorously suggested adding a corset to Sánchez’s suit, to which she playfully agreed that she would have likely welcomed the idea.
While creating something “flattering and sexy” was a priority, Sánchez emphasized the importance of functionality in their suits for the flight. She recalled testing early prototypes: “I was stretching. I was doing a back bend. I was like, ‘Okay, let’s make sure it doesn’t split up the back in space.’”
In a conversation with Elle, Sánchez, Perry, 40, and King, 70, discussed how they plan to incorporate glam into their space mission. “Who would not get glam before the flight?!” Sánchez exclaimed, adding, “We’re going to have lash extensions flying in the capsule!”
Perry enthusiastically added, “Space is going to finally be glam. Let me tell you something. If I could take glam up with me, I would do that. We are going to put the ‘ass’ in astronaut.”
The announcement of the celebrity flight was made in February 2025, with the launch expected to occur around 9:30 a.m. ET, according to CBS.
