Summer acne struggles? Here’s how to keep breakouts at bay

The beach lovers wait desperately for the summers, but what they forget is that hot temperatures also bring along acne flare-ups. The high temperatures, humid weather, sweat and excess sebum clog the skin pores and trigger breakouts. If you feel that your skin becomes bumpy in summer, you are not alone. Carry out these basic lifestyle changes, and see the results in mere weeks. • Opt for a lightweight face cleanser – Sweat and excess sebum mix with dirt during summer, which can clog pores. Opt for a gentle, foaming cleanser with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide if you’re acne-prone. These ingredients help clear pores and reduce inflammation without over-drying your skin. • Moisturiser should be non-negotiable – Many assume oily skin doesn’t need moisturising. But skipping this step can lead your skin to produce even more oil. Choose a gel-based, non-comedogenic moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pores.

• Sunscreen should be a must – The harmful UV rays lead to skin’s hyperpigmentation and can give acne breakouts due to extreme heat. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen possessing a minimum SPF of 30. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based formulas—they’re great for sensitive, acne-prone skin. • Practice face blotting instead of wiping – It’s tempting to wipe away sweat, but harsh rubbing can irritate your skin and spread bacteria. Instead, use blotting papers or a clean, soft cloth to gently pat sweat off your face, especially after workouts.

• Be mindful while choosing makeup – in summer, heavy makeup can trap sweat and bacteria. If you must wear makeup, go for lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic products. Always remember to remove it thoroughly before bed. • Always bath after an intense activity session – post-gym or outdoor activity – don’t delay your shower. Letting sweat sit on your skin can lead to body acne. Use a mild body wash with salicylic acid on breakout-prone areas like your back and shoulders.

• Hydration and a wholesome diet should be focused on – hydration helps to flush out toxins and keeps your skin plump. Reduce sugar and high-glycaemic foods, which may trigger inflammation and acne. Add skin-friendly foods rich in zinc, omega-3s, and antioxidants. • Refrain from over-exfoliating the skin – While exfoliation helps slough off dead skin cells, doing it too frequently in summer can strip your skin’s natural barrier. Limit physical or chemical exfoliation to 1-2 times a week and always follow up with hydration and SPF.All you have to do is keep the skin clean, well hydrated and sun protected too, and soon you will enjoy the perks of clean skin this summer.Inputs by: Dr Ipshita Johri, Dermatology & Aesthetic Consultant, Laser Specialist & Founder, Skinfinity Derma.
