Josh Charles to Star in ‘Doc Martin’ Adaptation at Fox

Fox is adding another medical show to its roster.

The network has given a series order to Best Medicine, an adaptation of the long-running British series Doc Martin. Josh Charles will star in the show, which Fox describes as an hour-long comedy, as a successful surgeon who abruptly leave his post in Boston to become a general practitioner in the East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a kid.

Fox Entertainment will own and produce the series along with Propagate Content. All3Media International owns the Doc Martin format. Propagate’s Ben Silverman will executive produce with Rodney Ferrell (Apple TV+’s forthcoming Stick), Liz Tuccillo (Sex and the City, Divorce) and Doc Martin EPs Mark Crowdy and Philippa Braithwaite.

“The story of Doc Martin has resonated worldwide with its humanity, originality, and humor, and with Best Medicine coming to Fox, that eccentricity gets a small-town America spin, complete with idyllic charm and absurdity,” Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn said in a statement. “Liz, Mark, Philippa, Ben, and Rodney have done a terrific job adapting this signature character for the Fox audience, especially in casting the terrifically talented Josh Charles as our lead.”

Added Silverman, “The entire Propagate team is thrilled to be working with Fox Entertainment on this extraordinary adaptation by Liz Tuccillo of the global hit Doc Martin. Josh Charles is the perfect lead for this brilliantly character-driven comedic procedural. Best Medicine is a world we’ll all want to be part of.”

Charles currently appears in the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. He earned a pair of Emmy nominations for his role on The Good Wife; other TV credits include Sports Night, The Veil, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and HBO’s We Own This City.

Best Medicine is Fox’s first new scripted series order for 2025-26 (animated series American Dad is also returning to the network after a long run on TBS). The show will join another medical series, Doc, on Fox next season.

THR’s broadcast scorecard has a rundown of all the series orders, renewals and cancellations for 2025-26.
