Jacksonville Jaguars’ Arik Armstead and Wife Mindy Welcome Baby No. 3: ‘We Love the Chaos’ (Exclusive)

Arik and Mindy Armstead are parents again!

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive end, 31, and his wife Mindy, welcomed their third baby together, a son named Audemar Kristian Armstead, on Monday, March 31, at 2:22 a.m., announcing the news exclusively with PEOPLE.

The newborn, who weighed 10 lbs and 3 oz. at birth, shares his middle name with his father. His first name, which means nobility and strength, was suggested by Arik’s sister-in-law.

“It feels good,” Arik tells PEOPLE of becoming a first-time boy dad. “I asked a few boy dads like the differences and stuff, and it actually feels good because — not to say that it was repetitive by any means — having a boy and a new experience and all the newness that comes with it, I feel like it was a good experience for us and it’s something that we’re going through together as a family.”

“And, I know that our daughters too are really happy to have a baby brother, so it’s definitely been a great experience thus far,” he adds, noting that he’s excited to continue growing and evolving with his family.

While it’s not the couple’s first experience welcoming a little one into the home, having a boy adds an interesting new layer to their household. Mindy even jokes that, despite how careful they were, there is one thing they couldn’t avoid with their baby boy.

“I’ll say we were warned, but we’ve both been peed on a couple of times, no matter how careful we are,” she tells PEOPLE. “Everyone warned us, but I don’t know. Boys are different.”

If there’s one thing that the newly minted mom of three learned from welcoming her two girls, Ayla, 2, and Amiri, 4, it’s that sometimes it’s better to just go with the flow. She says that she took that philosophy with her into both of her birth experiences after welcoming her older daughter.

“You can do all the things, but it’s impossible to be fully prepared, so it’s better just to go with the flow,” she says. “Sure enough, I was in early labor and then I just did my best to go with the flow. It was scary because my first two daughters, we had in California with the same OB-GYN, the same nurse, so I didn’t know what to expect here in Florida, but it was great.”

With the new baby finally home, the Armsteads are focused on making sure all of their children feel their love, while soaking in each moment.

“I’m always learning patience and having all your children on your mind,” Arik says. “Even though you have a newborn and a newborn needs a lot of attention and needs to be catered to, nurtured, and all that, so do your other kids.”

In agreement with her husband, Mindy adds, “I’ve just been trying to … soak in this phase a little bit more because I realized, with the other two, how quickly it goes.”

Their girls quickly jumped into their big sister roles, with Mindy adding that she has to remind them that they are not the baby’s parents.

“It’s been really fun,” Mindy tells PEOPLE. “The girls, as much as I’m trying to remind them they’re not his parents, they’re like, ‘This is my baby and I want to rock him and I want to hold him. Give me my baby.’ So, it’s actually been really cute.”

“They [also] came and visited us at the hospital, which was new for me because both my daughters were COVID babies,” she adds. “They came to the hospital and Arik was holding the baby and they just were so excited and they ran right over to him and they were all trying to kiss him and told him, and they had to immediately be put in the rotation for holding him, but it was definitely a really special moment.”

The new addition officially makes the Armsteads a family of five. While three children under 5 may be a challenge to navigate, the couple is not sure that this is their last time adding to their family.

“I wish I was one of those people that had that feeling that was like, ‘I’m done.’ But, I don’t know, I guess time will tell,” Mindy shares. “I think we’re both open to more children just in time. [We’ll] see how three goes.”

“We love kids, … so it’s [not] hard to be like, ‘Who wouldn’t want more kids around?’ We’re both from big families,” she adds. “I think maybe that’s part of it too. We love the chaos.”
