Kate Hudson Shares How She Protects Her 3 Kids from the Spotlight: ‘Just a Part of What Happens’

Kate Hudson might be one of the most famous actresses, but she’s also a proud mama bear — and she takes steps to ensure her kids are protected.

The Running Point star, 45, spoke with Kylie Kelce on her podcast Not Gonna Lie and was asked how she goes about protecting her three kids — daughter Rani, 6, and sons Bingham, 13, and Ryder, 21 — from the attention of being in the Hollywood spotlight.

“There’s two ways to go. If you’re someone who’s like, really wants to keep things private private, you know, I think you just make that very clear to whoever it is, whether it be press or whether it be you taking a picture with a fan,” Hudson begins.

“It’s like when you’re with your kids, it’s just, ‘I’m with my kids, and I really don’t do that when I’m with my kids,’ ” she continues. “I mean, that’s kind of what I grew up with. When we would go out to dinner and stuff, that was just my parents’ thing.”

Hudson went on to say that you need to have some type of “boundary” to show kids that you’re paying attention to them and that all the noise from other people isn’t truly real.

“And what I mean by that is it doesn’t feed it, it didn’t feed them,” Hudson says. “We fed them more, meaning that connection, so sometimes [my parents] would put a boundary down with people.”

“Then there’s the other side, which is it can become exhausting trying to protect your children all the time. Meaning at some point, there might be a moment where you just go, this is what our life is, and you explain it to them in a way so that they understand that getting validated by other people isn’t gonna bring you joy,” she explains. “But that this is just a part of what happens when you do something that people recognize.”

“So I think that’s kind of what I do,” adds Hudson. “And then, as they get older, they kind of define what their boundaries are.”
